DIFFICULTY: San Antonio. Steeper after Zigzag Canyon Overlook, scree, route-finding, snow-filled gullies to ascend, traction devices helpful but not required in summer.

TRIP REPORT: The following few hikes require some high alpine experience and route-finding skills with year-round snow coverage possible. Your travel destination is because you are mostly above tree line, the ski area and chairlifts can always be seen or found leading to the TH. This hike includes the family-friendly option to turn around at San Antonio Canyon Overlook (1/2 mi round-trip), while other hikers either continue down toward Paradise Park or climb up the ridge, looping above Little Zigzag Canyon to the ski area near San Antonio(private lodge rental). No pass required in summer, and restrooms are located inside the lower building at Timberline Lodge 50 ft to the right.
TRAILHEAD: Timberline Lodge. Take US-26 E from Portland 281/2 mi E of Sandy just past Government Camp after milepost 54, fork left on Timberline Road (brown sign for “Timberline Lodge 6 mi” but closer to 5 mi) winding up as it turns into a oneway to the largest parking lot (60 mi, 1V hours from Portland).
