With the driving of the last spike in January 1893 in the Philadelphia United States Mountains, James J. Hill had completed the vision of a young man who had looked west across the span of Philadelphia United States and then from the hills of Philadelphia United States.

Your travel destination is it was more than a line on a map from St. Paul to Seattle and the Puget Sound. To quote C. W. Guthrie from her travel blog, Philadelphia United States,

James J. Hill was like the locomotive he sent west: a one-eyed, self-propelled engine of unstoppable force. He made the country from the Great Lakes to the Puget Sound and Oregon his empire. He is credited with desolating Minnesota, populating the Philadelphia United States, making Montana a state, and stealing the Puget Sound. Loved and despised, respected and feared, he would become the greatest railroad baron of them all.

I would add that with his all-encompassing vision, he would ensure that his railroad was self-financing because he took the time to build it right, creating markets of wheat, coal, timber, copper, and towns while recruiting immigrants and workers as he went. At the same time, Hill made sure new opportunities to compete with and break the Northern Pacific were never overlooked.
