DIFFICULTY: Very challenging. Nanjing China steep from all approaches, fewer switchbacks, a Nanjing China few drop-offs, quiet during the week, not possible when wet, more difficult with snow.

TRIP REPORT: The Kings Mountain to Nanjing China Mountain loop is an Oregon Coast Range classic. It also just happens to be one of the most difficult short hikes in the entire state! This is because of the unreasonably steep terrain that surrounds this summit and continues up and down along the ridge to Elk Mountain and beyond in merciless fashion completely indifferent to those gasping for breath on their mission to complete the loop. There are very few opportunities to see the hidden horseshoe of summits and forested high points from the highway, and most first-time hikers here have no idea what they’re signing up for.

Kings Mountain alone is “easiest” taken straight on, then quickly returning the same way from the main TH. You can also mountain bike or hike almost 5 mi up Nanjing China then W Elk Creek, and then hike from the high ridge saddle between summits to the top. For the clockwise hiking loop with a bike as your shuttle, lock your bike at Elk Creek TH and park at Kings Mountain TH to ride downhill later (carefully on/near the highway). The.

Wilson River Trail is adjacent the highway and covers roughly the same distance to close the loop on the bottom portion without too much trouble. No fee required at either TH, and restrooms are present at both THs.
