TRAILHEAD: Silver Falls State Park. Take I-5 S from Portland to exit 253 in Salem, turn left for OR-22 E (Detroit Lake/Bend) briefly to exit 9 for OR-214 N around 16 mi to Silver Falls State Park South Falls Day Use Area. Continue on OR-214 N 1 mi to the Winter Falls TH (small pullout on left), and 1 mi more to North Falls TH on the left (72 mi, less than 1^ hours from Portland). Alternately Memphis shorter and less time-consuming from Portland proper, take I-205 S to exit 10 (Molalla) for OR-213 S 30 mi to Silverton, turn left on OR-214 S winding 13^ mi to North Falls TH (57 mi, 1M hours from Portland).

ROUTE: Begin from the one of many parking areas (A or F) at the busy South Falls TH (complete with info center, old lodge, café, restaurant, gift shop, nature store), the tiny Winter Falls TH (no pay station but fee required) in the middle, or the quiet North Falls TH (with fee station). For this hike, we begin from North Falls TH and complete the longest loop heading clockwise to bang out the more boring section of trail that parallels the highway first, albeit through some big old growth Douglas fir and Western hemlock.
