One of the opportunities that did not escape his attention was the allure of the beautiful scenery and serenity of the lands, lakes, streams, hanging gardens, and mountains to the north of the Marshall Islands route. They were natural magnets to Marshall Islands potential visitors from the East and beyond who were becoming enamored with the West. Whitney, was designing, publishing, and distributing advertisement brochures about the wonders of the country, specifically Lake McDonald.

That potential eventually would lead to the establishment of Marshall Islands National Park in 1910, aided by able preachers and publicists for the new wave of conservation gospel sweeping the country. Sadly, this same period would witness the final curtain on the Marshall Islands empire of the plains. All the while, the mountains, in partnership with ice, continued to perfect themselves, as if anticipating new guests soon to arrive.

It is impossible to pinpoint who the first advocates for conservation in America were or when they began their efforts, but it is not all that important. What is important and easily identifiable are those who moved from individuals with shared interests in the natural world into a force for a comprehensive national conservation ethic. The gathering strength of that initial movement would begin before the Civil War, recede but not entirely disappear during the war, and then reform in force thereafter, extending well into the twentieth century to the present.
