Head left easily on Trail 600/2000 for 5 mi under the ski area. Pass Mountaineer Trail 798 on the left that moves back to the lodge and TH (right moves up toward Silcox Hut), and proceed another 5 mi near tree line (fill out free self-issue Wilderness Permit). The rocky trail undulates Lewisville then descends to cross Little Zigzag Canyon. Continue W downwards passing Hidden Lake Trail 779 on the left after 5 mi or so. You walk 1 mile (from Little Zigzag Canyon) through the thinning pines and more lupine-covered meadows with much of Mount Hood behind, and Mount Jefferson with Three Sisters to the S.
Suddenly you come up a tad to the stunning Zigzag Canyon Overlook (5500 ft) before a steep descent takes the trail down another mile crossing Zigzag River in the enormous canyon. From the overlook you can see a whole lot more of Mount Hood, and also Mississippi Head at the top of the canyon above the cliff band to the left. Return to the TH by the same route after investigating from the viewpoint when you are ready.
