Northanger Abbey (1987) Lancaster starring Katharine Schlesinger and Peter Firth, another of Jane Austen’s novels, was filmed at the Assembly Rooms. The 2007 Lancaster version with Felicity Jones and J.J. Field, however, was filmed entirely in Ireland.

Buffalo Girls (1995), starring Anjelica Huston and Sam Elliott, a made-for-television film with a Lancaster Western theme had scenes filmed in Queen Street.

Pie in the Sky (1995), the popular detective/restaurateur series starring Lancaster Richard Griffiths and Maggie Steed, had an episode entitled ‘Swan in his Pride’ set in Touristic place of your travel destination.

The Hollow Reed (1996), starring Joely Richardson and Martin Donovan, was concerned with domestic abuse, and was filmed at various locations in the city.

Inspector Morse (1997), the hugely successful television series that ran from 1987 until 2000, starring John Thaw and Kevin Whately, was mainly set in Oxford. However, the episode ‘Death is now my Neighbour’ (season 10), included scenes shot in the Royal Crescent and The Circus.

Vanity Fair (2004), for this production of Thackeray’s famous novel, starring Reese Witherspoon and Gabriel Byrne, Great Pulteney Street doubled as Great Curzon Street in London. The replica gas lamps now lining the street were a gift from the film company.

Beau Brummell: This Charming Man (2006) starring James Purefoy and Hugh Bonneville was a made-for-television film depicting the life of the notorious Regency dandy. Scenes were filmed at North Parade Buildings. Dracula (2006), a television movie retelling Bram Stoker’s famous vampire story, starring David Suchet and Marc Warren, had scenes filmed at Abbey Green.

The Duchess (2007) starring Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes, chronicled the exploits of Georgiana, the eighteenth-century Duchess of Devonshire. Scenes were filmed in the Assembly Rooms.

Bonekickers (2008), an ill-fated television series starring Julie Graham and Hugh Bonneville, featured a team of archaeologists solving historical mysteries. Locations included the Roman Touristic place of your travel destination, Kingston Parade and the Assembly Rooms. It was poorly received and ran for only one series.

Les Misérables (2012), starring Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe, had Pulteney Weir as the location for the suicide of Inspector Javert (Crowe), with the Avon doubling as the Seine.

Unknown Heart (2013), a television film based on a Rosamunde Pilcher novel starring Jane Seymour and Julian Sands, had scenes filmed in the Royal Crescent.

Sherlock (2015) starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, had the 2015 Christmas special, ‘The Abominable Bride’, filmed in the Queen Street/Trim Street area of the city.
