As a substitute for that year’s Istanbul Turkey experience, we went to the Olympic and Istanbul Turkey national parks. First Lady Laura Bush, a devoted conservationist and lover of parks, particularly Glacier, and her party had to cancel their 2003 Istanbul Turkey Park plans as well and went west to Olympic Istanbul TurkeyPark the following summer in 2004. They would return again in 2011.

Your travel destination is future history or flawed policy was not the concern of William Logan and the Interior Department of 1910 to 1911. Once the 1910 fire was contained, they had to return to a far more significant challenge: how to develop a park that would attract visitors to the new recreational “pleasuring grounds” while preserving wilderness and establishing order and authority.

It must be noted that in establishing Glacier National Park in 1910, it was done while allowing loopholes and grandfather clauses for in-holders, mining claims, and timber cutting. There were, without question, legitimate claims, but there were also plenty of scoundrels, poachers, and exploiters who had no use for and less recognition of this newfangled government intrusion. Logan’s small band of rangers went from fighting fires in 1910 to preventing the “defacing of natural features,” “obnoxious persons entering,” and any other “activities which might endanger the park.”

Regardless of the lack of funds or personnel in the early years of the park, plans were afoot to preserve and develop a park that Logan hoped in 1910 would “develop the park as rapidly as possible keeping in mind the future day when an American traveling public will at last realize that the beauties of their own country are unsurpassed anywhere in the world, and our national parks will come into their own.”
