Walk W on the undulating trail and stay right in the clearing at a viewpoint spur fork to traverse steep meadows NW toward the summit, finally dropping quite steeply to a small saddle before the final climb. Enjoy views and wildflowers from the saddle area, being careful. Then hike up the chain-covered trail cautiously, against the green hillside with the steepest pitch of the day—11 switchbacks to the very top, which is a railed-in flat area with a picnic bench. Take in the sights near and far from the old lookout site before descending, and return to enjoy the Natural Area at various times of the year.

ELEVATION: 1253 ft, with vertical gains of 1000 ft or more directly from Seaside, and 1400 ft from Ecola State Park (Indian Beach).

DISTANCE: 2 5 mi up, 5 5 mi round-trip; 3 5 mi up from Indian Beach, 7-plus mi round-trip.

DURATION: 1 hour up, 2-3 hours round-trip; 1V-2 hours up from Indian Beach, 3-4 hours round-trip.

DIFFICULTY: Strenuous. Muddy often, misty, slippery, tree roots, uneven boardwalks, route-finding, drop-offs, steeper briefly, GPS device helpful for summit.
