Your travel destination is as late as the 1880s, this wide, relatively flat valley was undiscovered, protected by myth, fog, and the Blackfeet’s determination not to aid the white man’s further invasion. By the time of Hill’s railroad appearance, gathering evidence suggested that such a pass, suitable for his line to traverse, was out there—somewhere.

Lewis and Clark nearly got there but turned back after their first encounter with the Blackfeet warriors. Though minor as far as clashes go, it added to the growing legend of the warriors of the plains. Thereafter for decades, traders and settlers skirted north and south of the tribes, leaving active exploration for the pass until eighty years later.

Again, James Hill’s passion for detail led him to explore every map and journal that might shed some light on the mysterious pass’s whereabouts. By 1889, his railroad had reached Havre, Montana. To proceed over the most direct route with the lowest possible grades, he had to find that pass.
