Walk left onto the wide and dusty trail and ascend 10 reasonably steep switchbacks along the S side of the mountain and on the ridge itself bordering Crater Lake to the summit. Keep in mind that just like Rim Drive (without any guard rails) the trails here have no safety fences to protect you when you approach the crater’s edge for endless panoramas. Traction devices might help in July as the last of a short steep pitch after 8 switchbacks finally melts off. Later in the day the snow warms up and isn’t as much a problem. There is even a brief and deep glissade chute next to the steeper snow trail.

The snowy trail traverses right a moment, and then heads left up the ridgeline again. See your goal and the big snow cornice hanging from it (until late summer), and remember to keep your distance once on top if snow and ice remain. Otherwise, wildflowers pop up along the rocky path where there isn’t snow, and after a couple more switchbacks you climb to the top of the mound with very few trees around. The views of the lake and surroundings are similar to Watchman Peak, only even more intense! Some people find the bushwhack continuing SE along the rim without difficulty over to Applegate Peak and back, but most return down for more pronounced trails around the park.
