It was as if all the rings that had aligned over thousands of years to lead the Blackfeet nation to become the unquestioned empire of the northwestern plains were shattered in an instant. During that short span of time, the population of the tribes (numbering approximately 12,000) that had held sway over a landmass in Montana and Canada larger than the size of all of New England was greatly reduced by starvation, the smallpox plague of 1869 to 1870, continuing warfare with equally desperate tribes, and clashes with white settlers and soldiers. The conflict culminated when a military expedition ambushed and massacred a Blackfeet encampment on the Marias River.

The problem (among many) was that it was the wrong camp! The 1870 attack on friendly (but smallpox-riddled) Blackfeet led by Chief Heavy Runner saw the murder of 173 tribesmen and the capture of 140 women and children. The results, once publicized, led to a national outrage and policy change. Thereafter, the practice of employing army officers as Indian Agents was dropped, but matters did not improve much.
